IPTV EPG not showing? Check XMLTV and M3U channel IDs

An IPTV playlist can load channels successfully while its programme guide remains empty. A stream URL carries video; an electronic programme guide (EPG) needs separate, current schedule data and a match between each channel and its guide entry.

What the XMLTV guide needs

XMLTV is a common XML format for TV schedules. A provider may supply a guide URL alongside an M3U playlist, or embed an XMLTV reference in the playlist header. IPTV Live's Android EPG parser recognizes x-tvg-url, url-tvg and tvg-url playlist metadata when a usable guide is available; not every source includes one.

Illustrative M3U header and channel

#EXTM3U x-tvg-url="https://example.org/guide.xml"
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="example.news" group-title="News",Example News
https://example.org/authorized-stream.m3u8

The example URLs are placeholders and do not provide playable streams or TV data. Keep private playlist URLs and guide tokens confidential.

An XMLTV entry typically identifies the schedule by a channel ID, such as example.news. A matching tvg-id in the M3U item helps a compatible player join programmes to a channel.

Checklist when the IPTV programme guide is blank

  1. Confirm that your provider supplies EPG data. Loading a valid M3U does not automatically create schedules. Ask the source operator whether it offers an XMLTV feed and which channels it covers.
  2. Check that the XMLTV link is still accessible. Expired access tokens, an HTTP error, or a temporary guide-server outage can leave the channels playable but the schedule missing. Test through the provider's supported interface; do not paste credentialed URLs into public diagnostic sites.
  3. Compare channel IDs. A tvg-id that does not match an XMLTV channel ID may prevent exact matching. Some players attempt channel-name matching, but spelling changes and duplicate names can still give wrong results.
  4. Check schedule dates and the time zone. An XMLTV feed can be valid but outdated, have no programmes for the current day or contain time offsets that make entries appear at the wrong time.
  5. Try a fresh provider guide. Use the supported refresh or reimport process when your app offers it. Cached guide data may be stale; don't remove a working playlist before saving its original source.

Guide data is different from stream playback

An EPG can display programme information for a channel that cannot currently play, and a playable channel can have no EPG. For M3U8/HLS compatibility, read our stream manifest guide. For missing video, follow the black-screen checklist or buffering troubleshooting guide.

The browser playlist explorer at IPTV Player HQ and the separate IPTV Live Android app have different capabilities. This article explains guide metadata; it does not promise manual XMLTV URL configuration in every player or a guide for every playlist.

Use sources you're authorized to access

IPTV Player HQ provides a web explorer for public-source listings and your own playlists; IPTV Live is a separate Android player. Neither service sells subscriptions, supplies premium channels or grants broadcast rights.
